Featured Artist Questionnaire - Heather Graham

Creative Medium:  Stoneware pottery

Q1. What artist has influenced you the most?

I admire many potters and have learnt from most of them. A finished piece of pottery is the result of a multitude of small techniques and as I work I remember with gratitude all the generous potters who have demonstrated their skills for others over the years

Q2. What is it that inspires you most in Norfolk?

Much of my inspiration comes from the clay itself and the magic that happens in the heat of the kiln but I am always on the lookout for natural things like leaves, seeds and shells that can be pressed into the clay to create textures. Ideas for one off pieces often originate when I am out walking in Breckland with my dog, not necessarily inspired by the landscape but the peace and solitude free up my mind to explore new directions.

Q3. If you had to pick a favourite past artwork of yours what would it be?

There is one piece that I made many years ago that I would not part with. I was commissioned to make a jug based on the 14th century Grimston ware. It had a face on the rim and I was lucky enough to be lent an original fragment to copy. After the commission had been filled I made another one for myself which turned out to be much better than the first one. It was glazed with a lovely apple ash glaze that I had just developed and everything worked just as I had hoped – a rare occurrence!

Q4. What are you working on at the movement?

I have been invited to take part in a sculpture trail at Hoveton Hall in the summer so I am planning work for the garden. At the moment I have a few bird baths going through the Kilns and other garden/conservatory ideas are incubating. I am sure that I will revisit the Green Man if I have the time.

Q5. Can you choose 5 words that best describes your art?

Useful, colourful, traditional, durable, domestic.

Breckland Artists Latest Member Jayne Stinton.

We are delighted to introduce you to the latest addition to the group, Jayne Stinton.
"I am a visual artist (and sometimes jewellery-maker) and work from my studio at home in Garboldisham on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. Although I occasionally dip into portrait and other figurative work, I am principally a mixed-media artist pursuing abstract and semi-abstract explorations of atmosphere, feeling and visual imagery through line, form and texture using drawing and mixed-media."

Featured Artist - Jill Sharpe

Jill Sharpe is are next Featured Artist who specialises in stitched textiles.

Q1. Which artist has influenced you the most?

It would be hard to pick one particular artist but the work of Gerhard Richter by its very diversity has to be one. For colour I consider Matisse and Hockney influential and in the field of textiles Sara Impey and Pauline Burbidge are favourites.

Q2. What is it that inspires you most in Norfolk?

I love the seasonal changes and watching the crops developing. The landscape in itself does not inspire me having more affinity with northern moorlands but I love observing the sea in all its different moods.

Q3. If you had to pick a favourite past artwork of yours what would it be?

A piece called Entwined made in 2011. It is hand sewn in silk using paper templates and hand quilted. The design plays with multiple symmetries and the interplay of shades of colour.

Q4. What are you working on at the movement?

I have been producing a series of pieces using the titles of tracks from Bob Dylan’s album Blood on the Tracks. I have completed Shelter from the Storm, Tangled up in Blue and Meet Me in the Morning  and am working on Idiot Wind at the moment.

Q5. Can you choose 5 words that best describes your art?

Texture, Flow, Movement, Colour and Line.

This new post lets you get to know a little bit more about us all as individual artists. We start the New year off with Emma Wells who specialises in encaustic wax art and mixed media painting.

Q1. What artist has influenced you the most?

I couldn’t pin point it down to a particular artist but I love the mark-making, composition and freedom of Chinese Brush Painting, from the old calligraphy scrolls to the thrown ink style of flora and fauna. I always try to add an element of this into my own artwork.

Q2. What is it that inspires you most in Norfolk?

There is so much inspiration in Norfolk for artists but what inspires me the most would be tall sedge grass blowing in the wind, dramatic stormy skies and the mud flats at low tide.

Q3. If you had to pick a favourite past artwork of yours what would it be?

A mixed media on paper piece called 'Fenland'. This is a personal favourite of mine as it is extremely atmospheric and captures the eerie gloom of the fens just as the rain and darkness falls.

Q4. What are you working on at the movement?

Currently I am working on an encaustic wax collection of British garden birds inspired by the many colourful winged visitors to my own garden.

Q5. Can you choose 5 words that best describes your art?

mark-making, colourful, fluid, expressive and atmospheric

Seventeen artists, one venue, a wealth of art

The Breckland Artists bring a new and vibrant exhibition to Wymondham this November with three additional artists.

Breckland Artists are a diverse group of seventeen artists, living and working in the south west of the county, who originally got together following participation in the Norfolk Open Studios scheme. In 2012, Breckland Artists celebrated their tenth anniversary.  The group’s longevity and appeal owes much to the diversity of subject matter and the range of techniques employed.

The group, which includes artists specialising in painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, glass, photography and textiles, will be bringing an eclectic and vibrant mix of work to Wymondham Arts Centre to delight and inspire the people of Norfolk.

Roger Gamble, Chairman and one of the founder members said, “Our 2012 exhibition at Wymondham Arts Centre was extremely well received and we are delighted to be returning with a new selection of workWe hope that visitors in 2013 will share our passion for the visual arts and enjoy the work on show.”

New artist, Les Williams, will be exhibiting his pen and wash drawings.  Les, who trained at the Princes Drawing School, produces his drawings on location to capture the moment and finds inspiration in the life and buildings of the city of London.

This will also be the first time that new artist member, Marie Dawe, exhibits at Wymondham with Breckland Artists.  Marie is an artist specialising in fused glass and her work is an exciting new addition to the group.

The 2013 Wymondham exhibition also sees the welcome return of painter Jane Wareham who returns to exhibiting with Breckland Artists for the first time in two years.

Breckland Artists have been exhibiting annually in Wymondham for the past three years and, in 2013, bring a new and exciting body of work to Wymondham Arts Centre.  With their exhibitions becoming increasingly popular in recent years they are confident that this exhibition will have something for everyone.  Members have been included in, and won awards in, major national and regional exhibitions with their work seen in many galleries in East Anglia and beyond.

The Breckland Artists’ exhibition will be held in the fine space of Wymondham Arts Centre, located at Church Street, Wymondham. The show runs from Tuesday 5th to Sunday 27th November, 10am to 4pm, daily except Sunday 12pm to 4 pm.
